Over the years, plenty of players have chosen to leave Celtic in order to move down to England. That is a well-travelled path, both for youngsters looking to break through into senior football and established names attracted by the glitz and glamour of the Premier League. Now, another name has been added to that list.
One complaint that Celtic fans have had in recent years is regarding the club's inability to provide a proper pathway into the first-team for their academy graduates. And unfortuntely, that situation seesm to be showing no signs of changing.
Another Celtic academy graduate has now completed a move away from Parkhead. Like so many before him, he is hoping to make a name for himself in the lower leagues of English football to kickstart his career.
As reported by BBC, Rotherham have signed Celtic centre-back Lenny Agbaire. He has joined the English club on a three-year contract.
Another Celtic player quietly completes move to England
Agbaire came through the Celtic youth academy, spending ten years in the system, and signed his first professional contract in 2021. While he never made a senior appearance for the club, he did play under the management of Scott Brown on loan at Ayr United.
At 20 years of age, the defender needs to find some stability though and it is not hard to understand why he has chosen to leave. It remains to be seen how things turn out for him in England. We can only wish him the best of luck moving forward and hope he has a great career down south.
For Celtic, this just continues a worrying trend of players not being able to make it at the senior level at Parkhead. Sooner or later, the club need to come up with a plan. Otherwise, there won't be the likes of James Forrest, Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney in the future.
