Sky Sports have confirmed some bad news for Celtic in what has been a whirlwind past few days in the summer transfer window.

Left-back is one position where Celtic will need to make a signing this summer. They have already brought in Kieran Tierney as a free agent, but on the other hand, Greg Taylor has left at the end of his contract to join PAOK in Greece. Jeffrey Schlupp's loan deal from Crystal Palace has also come to an end and there are no suggestions about talks over a permanent deal at the moment.

Tierney is a fantastic signing but one cannot overlook his long injury history. Celtic will need to have a reliable backup option at all times.

One of the left-backs Celtic had been linked with recently is James Penrice of Hearts. But unfortunately, while he will be leaving the Edinburgh club this summer, it appears that he is headed to Greece, just like Taylor.

As reported by Sky Sports, Penrice has travelled to the Netherlands in order to undergo a medical with AEK Athens. The two clubs have already agreed on a £2 million deal.

Penrice has spent his entire career in Scotland so far. He came through the youth ranks at Partick Thistle, had loan stints at East Fife and Livingston, before joining the latter on a permanent basis. After that, he ended up at Hearts. Now, the 26-year-old has earned himself a move to AEK Athens.

It remains to be seen how things go for Penrice in Greece. Perhaps he will end up becoming a part of the Scotland national team picture at some point in the future.

As for Celtic, it looks like their hopes of signing Penrice this summer are now over. One would imagine that the Hoops have other targets in the back of their minds as well, as they continue to make additions left, right and centre.
