There has been some pretty good news for Celtic today as it was confirmed by several reliable sources that the club are set to sign Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, the Manchester City centre-back, on loan. But at the same time, there is an update that the fans won't like as much, as it looks like they have missed out on one of their targets as well.
It is no secret that Celtic are trying to strengthen in defensive midfield this summer. They have been linked with plenty of players in that area of the pitch. But one of their rumoured targets is now headed elsewhere, with the Hoops missing out.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, FC Basel have agreed a deal to sign Andrej Bacanin. It is for a €2.3m fee plus €700k add-ons.
So, all things considered, FC Basel are paying a total €3 million package to sign Bacanin from Cukaricki. It is hard to imagine that Celtic would have struggled to meet that asking price. But then again, one cannot forget that their highest fee paid this summer has been the £1.5 million for Benjamin Nygren.
'Agreed deal' - Fabrizio Romano confirms some bad news for Celtic
To be very honest, this has been one of the strangest transfer windows in Celtic's recent history. And there have been quite a few of them over the years for sure.
The club just do not seem convinced to go out and make a splash. This is very different from last summer, when they paid large fees to sign the likes of Adam Idah and Arne Engels.
Of course, there are question marks over those players. But at the end of the day, the ambition was clear to see. The same cannot be said this time around, as they seem to be intent on getting bargain deals for everyone.
