You don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that Celtic need to bring in a winger as soon as possible. It looks like the Hoops are intent on completely shaking up their ranks on the flanks this summer. They have already parted ways with Nicolas Kuhn and Luis Palma, while Marco Tilio is also believed to be on the verge of an exit. Yang Hyun-jun has also been linked with a move away from Glasgow.
That leaves Brendan Rodgers very light on options on the wings. Especially when you consider that Jota is not expected to feature again this year after suffering a serious injury towards the end of last season.
Naturally, Celtic have been linked with quite a few wingers in recent times. It is also believed that they made a failed £1.5 million bid for Jakob Breum of Go Ahead Eagles.
Retired Dutch manager, Jan van Staa, who had two stints with the Go Ahead Eagles, believes that his former club will want a significantly higher fee to part with someone of Breum's quality. As reported by The Glasgow Times, he said:
"Every club is looking for something special...and Breum is certainly special.
"I am not saying he will have the same career as Dusan Tadic, but he reminds me of him and Twente sold him for £7 million."
'£7 million' - Update on winger after Celtic transfer bid
That might be the ballpark number that Go Ahead Eagles want for Breum's transfer. It would be safe to say that if he is anywhere near as good as Tadic, Celtic will have signed a phenomenal talent.
Tadic was the UEFA Champions League top assist provider in the competition's Squad of the Season in 2018-19. He also made the Europa League Squad of the Season in 2020-21. He was instrumental in some of Ajax's biggest successes in this century and also had a four-year Premier League career with Southampton. Now, 36 years of age, he is still a regular for Fenerbahce and performing at a high level.
So, that is high praise for Breum indeed and another reason Celtic should go out and try to sign him. He scored 10 goals and provided 5 assists in 26 Eredivisie matches last season. A £1.5 million bid was never going to be enough to sign him.
Breum is 21 years of age and is only expected to get better. He ticks pretty much every box that Celtic look for when signing players. The Hoops need to stop trying to 'win' every deal and sometimes just go out and get deals over the line.
