Did Ange get it wrong or is it just the squad depth?

It is no secret that Celtic do not have a lot of depth at the moment. And the bench that they had against St Mirren is proof of that.

The Hoops were struggling to test the opposition goalkeeper but Ange Postecoglou did not have a goalscorer to bring off the bench. In fact, with Abada struggling, he did not have a goalscorer on the pitch for the entire game.

Tom Rogic has shown that he can pull a rabbit out of his magic hat from time to time but that cannot happen everyday.

The fact that Postecoglou could only bring in Liam Shaw, Josip Juranovic and Greg Taylor just shows the situation that this squad is in right now.

Could Postecoglou have fielded a stronger team than he did? Probably, but not by much. The only players who probably could have started on the day, who did not, are Joe Hart, Juranovic and Taylor, and maybe Adam Montgomery, whose form has faded away after a bright start as well.

Thus, this was a matter of injuries catching up to Celtic more than anything else.

A goalscorer badly needed in January

Related to the last point, Celtic badly need to bring in a goalscorer in January. The only two that have shown the ability to find the back of the net consistently are Jota and Kyogo. That is not enough to win a title race and on top of that, both are out injured right now.

Thus, the situation is far from ideal. While Albian Ajeti or Giorgos Giakoumakis being available for this game would have been a massive boost, neither of them have proven themselves as reliable goalscorers for Celtic either.

Thus, the club need to bring in someone who can score goals for them consistently. And with heavy rumours surrounding Daizen Maeda, Celtic might be hoping that the Japanese star is the man to do that.
