Lewis Ferguson could perhaps a controversial option for Celtic. He has a connection with the Rangers, with his father Derek and uncle, Barry Ferguson, both having been stars at Ibrox during their playing days.

Lewis has also scored quite a few goals against Celtic through the course of his career.

But looking at those gaps in the Celtic midfield and the need for a tough tackling, ball-playing player in the middle of the park for Celtic, Ferguson does certainly fit what Celtic might be looking for. The club have signed players in the past who have actually played for the Rangers, so signing the Aberdeen star should not be a problem.

Aberdeen are believed to have already turned down transfer bids for Ferguson in the past. But then, the player has tried to depart Aberdeen as well and in fact, he put in a transfer request earlier this year although it was rejected by the club.

Ferguson could be an option for Celtic. There are areas of his game that he needs to work on. But he certainly has the potential to be a very good player. The Aberdeen star turned 22 years of age not too long ago and is expected to improve further.

Another position where the Hoops need to strengthen in is centre-back. The club certainly have quite a few options there in the form of Carl Starfelt, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Stephen Welsh and Christopher Jullien expected to return soon as well, with Nir Bitton as a possible option too. But with injury worries and uncertainty over what will happen at the end of Carter-Vickers’ loan spell, signing another centre-back might not be a bad idea.

There’s also a question mark over left-footed players at the back. With Starfelt getting injured recently, we see Welsh and Carter-Vickers, both right-sided centre-backs, now pairing up at the back. That is not ideal.

So if the Hoops are looking to strengthen their depth in the left-hand side of defence, someone like Jamie McCart could be a solid signing.

McCart came through the Hoops’ academy but could not find a regular place in the first-team picture. He has done quite well at St Johnstone and played a huge part in their historic Cup double last season.
