Strengthen key positions further

Sutton sees a need not just to keep the squad resources already at Celtic but he also recognises there are some gaps and key positions which need strengthened. Fans have been calling out most of these points for some time now and will share some of Sutton’s thoughts. Although he’s indicated a need to keep players for squad depth, there will always be exceptions, Boli Bolingoli, if he can be moved on and replaced, is a good example of a sensible exit.

Let’s start with left back, Celtic are already short of alternatives with the departure of Jonny Hayes. Everyone will be happy if the club can move Bolingoli on, no one is likely to cheer if he has to stay and especially not if required to play. The question marks still exist over Greg Taylor, some will say their mind is made up already. It’s unlikely any fans see him as the first choice final solution there.

Sutton’s right on this point too, cover is needed, replacements are also needed urgently. If the reports of approaching Leeds for Barry Douglas or PSG for Mitchel Bakker are correct, then the board are on to this one in a good way.

Perhaps more controversially but again not an uncommon view across fans is Sutton’s view on Leigh Griffiths.

"“Leigh Griffiths’ indiscipline has shown he cannot be trusted”"

Sutton is convinced Patryk Klimala is seen as no more than a back up striker to Edouard and Ajeti. If Griffiths cannot be relied upon and whether you love him or not, it’s hard to be confident of his swift return to consistent, season long, top form. Then the conclusion is for a further forward in as back up. Clearly not a top drawer marquee signing, but a striker with goals in them makes sense.

And finally on this point re strengthening, with Craig Gordon and Fraser Forster having moved on and only Barkas arriving , the logic says there may still be a goal keeper gap. Maybe that’s why rumours of interest in Roma’s Swedish keeper Robin Olsen persist.

It’s hard to argue with Sutton’s 3 point plan overall. Finances may be an issue but perhaps the club aren’t too far off anyway on current plans. And of course the lure and attraction of 10iar is immense and would bring in its own revenue stream. The stakes are high, the rewards are enormous and of legendary status.
