The SFA are now investigating Rangers to understand why a game against Dundee United went ahead despite not meeting the strict COVID test rules.

This could have devastating effects on Scottish Football plans if the Scottish government warranted it a serious enough incident to halt the start of the season next week.

The Daily Record carries the story of nine Rangers players who had been with the first team squad in France for friendlies against Lyon and Nice. The nine played in the B team bounce match against Dundee United on Wednesday afternoon, apparently without having the necessary clearance from COVID testing beforehand.

All of the squad returning from France were tested. But delays on results coming through meant it was around 7pm on Wednesday before they arrived to give the all clear. That’s 1 hour before the rescheduled 8 p.m. Motherwell kick off and well after the B team game against Dundee Utd that afternoon.

The SFA are asking Rangers for a full explanation. We’ll have to hope it doesn’t need a dossier as they’ll need answers quickly!

The delays in testing results highlight the flaws in teams deciding to cut costs and not follow the route of Celtic and Ross County in paying for their own testing facilities.

The Record goes on to express concerns that the incident could be enough to trigger a reaction by the Scottish Government which delays the start of the season.

Perhaps the answer will lie on how such a scenario has arisen against very clear rules which apply to every team. Was this a clerical error or a known decision and disregard for the rules?
