Rangers defender Connor Goldson has slammed his own fans after many attacked him for his stance recently.
It is not often that you see a player go after there own fans. But, with Rangers it’s always a little bit different considering the fanbase. But that is exactly what Ibrox star Connor Goldson had to do after recent vile comments about his support for the Black Lives Matter movement surfaced.
During the preseason tournament in France, which was the first time Celtic and Rangers fans saw their clubs in action in over four months, all players and clubs involved kneeled prior to kickoff. It is a powerful image that should transcend sports and shows that, as a community, we are now listening to those that previously had little voice.
Naturally, some Rangers fans decided to resort to racist and bigoted comments when Goldson originally posted his kneeling photo on Instagram. In what should have been a powerful image was degraded due to the vile produced by Ibrox supporters.
Goldson then came right back and labeled many ‘disgusting’ for their views. Here is the Instagram post:
This type of movement and the support for it should transcend whether you wear green and white or whether you wear blue. Supporting and educating ourselves about the hardships and inequality that people face every single day is far more important for football. Yet, football is the perfect vessel to spread that message far and wide.
Despite all of this, there will also be people who will remain vile and ignorant. Good on Goldson for calling it out.
