One of Rangers’ veteran players has made claims that the Ibrox side can win the title and end Celtic’s quest for a historic tenth straight.
The Premier League veteran joined the Rangers a couple of seasons back but has failed to steer them to a single trophy since then. But as we know by now, the next season is always theirs.
First reported by the Daily Record, 37-year-old English striker Jermain Defoe has made claims on the Beautiful Game podcast that his side can do what they’ve not done in almost a decade-beat the Parkhead club to the league title. He spoke to the talent he sees within their side, saying:
"“Sometimes when I sit and look at the players and the squad we have, there is some unbelievable talent in that dressing room. We just need to believe we can do it this year… It is a massive season for everyone and the good thing is that everybody knows how big it is. I have sensed that in the pre-season and the training, how hard everyone is working and everybody is putting it in.”"
He goes on, speaking to the level of play in the SPFL:
"“Everybody wants to beat Rangers and the players who play against us want to play for Rangers so the games are tough. They come to Ibrox and are difficult to break down because they will block and frustrate us. If they get a 0-0 then for them they feel as if they won the game.”"
Rangers are of yet the side that Celtic will have to contend most with in order to secure their tenth-straight this season, and it’s safe to say that there is no love lost between the sides. Everybody can respect the talent the club has, but having lost the league by 13 points on the season, Hoops fans can rest assured their club should contend pretty well to make history in 2021.
Now, obviously, Defoe has made similar remarks before and has yet to back them up against the Hoops, failing to score against the side this season. Obviously, he is still a player to be respected, having scored 13 in league play this season for Rangers, enough for second behind Odsonne Edouard. Defoe has quite a resume over his 20+ year long career, having scored the eighth-most goals in Premier League history with 162, and winning a Football League Cup in 2008.
