UEFA’s latest U-turn is another major boost to Celtic’s 9-in-a-row hopes, following the result of yesterday’s EGM meeting.

The result of yesterday’s EGM meeting was clearly a huge boost for Celtic’s hopes to be crowned champions for the ninth straight time. The Rangers managed to get only 13 votes out of the 32 required to launch an independent investigation into the voting process, thereby ending their hopes. Now it is only a matter of time before Celtic lift the title.

Most fans would have preferred to witness their side do it on the pitch after all 38 games were played out but considering the current circumstances, that might not be a realistic option. A number of leagues are planning their return but it is to be seen how these go through with new players testing positive every day.

At the end of the day, if the Scottish Premiership is concluded as things stand then Celtic will be rightfully crowned as champions, as a result of their gigantic 13 point lead over Rangers with just 8 games left to played. Of course, the Ibrox side were hoping to somehow get the season declared ‘null and void’ but those hopes are dead in the water.

And even UEFA seem to be turning back on their previous plans, which required all leagues to inform them of their future plans by May 25 at the latest. Now, the leagues are expected to just give them an indication of their plans instead. This will give the SPFL some more time to come to a final decision.

As it becomes clear that this global pandemic could drag on for many more months and leave its effect on society for much longer, the UEFA seem to be softening their stance on the leagues around Europe. And rightfully so.

The Ligue 1 has already declared Paris Saint-Germain as champions and do not be surprised to see the Premiership follow suit in the near future.
