With a long-term shutdown in process, is it possible that Davie Provan could be correct in thinking that  Celtic could soon be in trouble?

Everyone has been thinking the same thing since the shutdown of football occurred almost six weeks ago: how long can clubs survive? Those questions were answered pretty quickly for smaller club- not long. But what about for larger clubs like Celtic?

The Hoops have made a commitment to not cut pay that would not be subsidized by government benefits. But how long can that really last? Without matches being played, less concessions and merchandise being sold, there is only so much room in even the largest of budgets for something like the even caused by COVID-19. That is just the reality.

As smaller clubs have started to find, the revenue generated from each match is perfectly calculated to help determine what contracts can be afforded, etc. So it may only be a matter of time.

Davie Provan brings up the point when speaking with Sun Sport:

"“If the money from television, sponsors and turnstiles is turned off, there won’t be a club left standing this time next year.“Even Celtic will be in bother if they have to honour players’ contracts.“Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack was spot on when saying the game is facing “financial Armageddon” if clubs can’t play soon.“That won’t happen unless Hampden convinces Holyrood it’s safe to do so.“Hard to see how Doncaster can sell that to politicians when Covid-19 continues to outrun us.”"

While it may be hard to admit, Provan is right. Even the Hoops won’t be immune to a long-term shutdown. A few weeks, to a couple of months was one thing. What about several months? A year? Economic effects will be felt no matter the size of the club.

Some type of solution will need to be passed soon if the SPFL wants to keep smaller clubs afloat until we see the other side. It may be only a matter of time until all clubs will need something to remain afloat.
