One former Celtic player reveals his mistake that ended up leaving him without a club this past season. A mistake he is paying for now.

Lots of talk about transfer fees, their records, and how it will affect clubs often swirl around certain players. Those talks intensify as the transfer windows start to get closer, and the subsequent rumours ensue. However, one oft overlooked aspect is free agency, and that road is one we are about to go down with a former Celtic man.

Youssouf Mulumbu, the former Hoops ace who saw some minutes in the Green and White is currently without a club due to testing the waters of free agency. After spending a spell on loan to Kilmarnock, Mulumbu decided he would try and leverage a move down South or to France.

Instead of a move, he found himself without a team, and subsequently without a paycheck. While Mulumbu had his challenges finding time in the first-team in Glasgow, he is a talented player. Which is why it is surprising he never found a club.

In an interview with The Sun, Mulumbu reveals the mistake he made when trying to find a new club, and why he remains jobless:

"“I was on loan at Kilmarnock from Celtic and then I went to play for at the Cup of Nations and it went well. When I came back there were offers from clubs in Turkey, but I wanted to play in a good league, like the English Championship or Ligue 1.”“So I decided to wait until a suitable offer came in. I was very demanding and decided to wait because there were only certain clubs I wanted to play for.”“Looking back, had I known what would happen, I should have thought more about certain offers. I am better known in the UK than in France because I have spent most of my career there.”"

Many football players believe their worth to be far more than it is. Mulumbu was and is no exception to that rule. Unfortunately he miscalculated and now finds himself without an employer.

As the Celtic Star astutely points out, during these times of financial crisis, many teams may be looking to bolster their roster through free agents due to the lack of a transfer fee. Mulumbu is all of a sudden a prime candidate to find a new club once things get back to normal.
