Celtic have a chance to sign £26-million Spaniard for free
By Kade Kistner
Celtic could have a chance at signing a £26-million-rated Spaniard for free Hoops boss Neil Lennon thinks according to a new report.
Celtic are always on the lookout for the best players available during the transfer windows. However, the Hoops usually shy away from bigger contracts, and instead prefer to develop their big money assets in house.
Now, there may be one of those “big money” players that could be had for free as the player is set to enter free agency. That player is Atletico Madrid’s Rodrigo Riquelme, a winger who is close to becoming a pending free agent.
A player of Rodrigo Riquelme’s calibre would go a long way in helping the Hoops bolster their roster for a run at the 10-in-a-row. It also meshes with the report that Neil Lennon is wanting to shake up the roster in a big way heading into the 2020/21 season (whenever that may be).
According to The Sun, Celtic manager Neil Lennon is well aware of Rodrigo Riquelme, a 20-year old, and his possible availability:
"“Hoops scouts have watched the Spanish kid, 20, in action for Atletico’s development side this season. And Parkhead boss Neil Lennon is believed to be aware of the highly-rated youngster’s availability.”"
Rodrigo Riquelme would suit Celtic’s playing style, and while he plays primarily on the right side, he could be a talent boost for the club if the Hoops decide not to bring Mohamed Elyounoussi in on a permanent deal.
Youth is also on the player’s side, and could see a great spell at Celtic while he continues to build his value, while also providing production to the first team. All of these factors are what the Hoops generally try and pursue when looking at adding a player to the roster.
