UEFA make stunning U-turn days after warning SPFL

UEFA have made a dramatic U-turn just days after warning leagues against declaring champions and it will be music to the ears of Celtic fans.

It has not been long since UEFA sent a letter to various leagues around Europe, warning them against declaring their champions after Club Brugge were crowned the winners of the Belgian league due to their 15 point lead at the top of the table. Of course, that left Celtic fans wondering about the future after reports had emerged in The Telegraph that the Hoops were going to be declared as champions as well.

According to the governing body, it was too early to reach such a decision and warned the leagues that their could be stopped from entering European competitions next season as a result of it. Yet the alarming increase in the number of coronavirus cases over the past week appears to have forced them into reevaluating the situation.

The UEFA had originally planned to end all the competitions by the end of June but that appears to be a dream at this point. And now even they are starting to realise that declaring league champions soon might be a more realistic option.

As reported by the Daily Record, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said:

"“I can’t see a way Liverpool could be left without a title. If the Premier League resumes, Liverpool will almost certainly win the title. Theoretically, it’s not all over, but practically Liverpool are on the verge of it.“If by any chance the play will not resume, we still have to find a way to declare final results, to declare champions.“I can’t imagine a scenario in which the champions wouldn’t be Liverpool. I understand fans will be disappointed if it happens in an empty stadium or even in the league offices, but they’ll get the title one way or another.”"

UEFA’s earlier comments had attracted a lot of backlash from around the footballing world. Chris Sutton even went as far as to claim it as bullying smaller clubs without the financial freedom of bigger sides.

Now while the future still remains uncertain as there is no certainty when a decision will ultimately be taken, one thing is for sure – there will be a champion. So the ‘null and void’ agenda that the Rangers fans and media have been pushing for the past month or so is completely dead in the water.
