Who thought that we would hear someone boast about Rangers’ financial muscle but its a bizarre world we are living in right now.

Ianis Hagi has not set the world on fire at Ibrox like most Rangers fans would want you to believe. In 10 appearances, he has scored 3 goals and admittedly had a good performance in that 3-2 comeback win over Braga in the Europa League.

It is questionable whether there would be so much hoopla around him if he was not Gheorghe Hagi’s son. But with how bad things have been for Steven Gerrard’s side since the turn of the year, it is not surprising that they are clutching at any straw that they can grab onto.

It has been revealed that Rangers have an option to sign Hagi for a transfer fee of £4.5 million from Genk when his loan spell ends at Ibrox. And his fellow countryman and former Rangers man himself, Dorin Goian, believes that the club will take up that option when the time comes.

And that might very well be the case come the end of the season, whenever that ends up being with the coronavirus outbreak having put the country under lockdown for the foreseeable future. But Goian’s choice of words must have amused a number of fans around Scotland.

As reported by the Daily Record, the former Romanian international said:

"“I know Rangers and their financial potential very well. I can tell you if they are satisfied with him – and I think they are – it certainly won’t be a problem for them to pay the money to Genk to sign Ianis.“Let me tell you a secret about Rangers’ financial muscle. When they were put into the fourth tier in Scottish football they not only wanted me to stay, but they offered me the same money I was on in the top league.“Ianis loves Rangers and playing at Ibrox. If he trusts his own talent and his potential, he will win the heart of the Rangers supporters, which is not easy.“It all depends on him which path he takes, but I am sure it will be at Rangers.”"

The thing about this though is that the Ibrox club were desperate to make it back into the Premiership at that point of time and would have expected to take a financial hit in order to do so. Money has continued to leak out of the club even since then though, even years after they made their way back into top division of the country.

And there is so much money that they can afford to lose before the meet the same fate that they did in 2012. They do not have any financial muscle at Ibrox, instead they are hanging by strings at the moment.
