The Scottish FA have decided to make a controversial decision over who will be officiating Sunday’s clash between Celtic and Rangers.
Celtic will be travelling across town to Ibrox on Sunday as they are set to take on Rangers in another iteration of the Glasgow Derby. As with all the matches between these two clubs, there is also high tension and drama leading up to the match.
Rangers coaches have created drama this week, as well as Steven Gerrard, and some of the players. However, the Scottish FA has joined in on the action now as well. Many Hoops fans have a particular disdain for the Scottish FA.
Many fans believe the Scottish FA is a corrupt body that remains unchecked. Their latest actions won’t help to quell those fears. The Scottish FA has now announced that John Beaton will be the referee for the match on Sunday.
As many Celtic fans remember, the referee was last seen drinking in a Rangers-supporters pub after the previous Glasgow Derby. However, Rangers fans still believe he is a Celtic-supporter. That notion is absolutely daft.
Still, Celtic may now have to not just overcome what will be a challenging Rangers squad, but also a Rangers-aligned referee. The Hoops have dealt with worse, and hopefully John Beaton has the integrity to call a fair match.
In any case, the Scottish FA needs to implement a new policy for choosing referees for future matches. Fair play and treatment should transcend any type of politicking in Scottish football.
