Rangers are apparently set to be handed a £20-million lifeline by two mystery investors although there is reason to be suspicious about these claims.
It is safe to say that Rangers are in a terrible state right now, both on and off the pitch. At the moment they find themselves 13 points behind Celtic in the Premiership table heading into next Sunday’s Glasgow Derby.
This is despite the fact that the club have spent astronomical amounts of money in the past few seasons. In fact over the last two seasons, they have posted losses amounting to £25 million. A sum that is huge for any club around the world, let alone one that plays in the financially struggling Scottish league.
Thus, one should not be surprised if the club is looking for new investors at the moment. But these recent claims regarding the two new investors appear to be too good to be true. In fact, it is very hard to not be suspicious about the timing of these rumours, just days away from the Glasgow Derby.
The only thing that is known about this apparent investors at this point of time are that one of them is an Asian investor and the other is a Hong Kong-based backer. As reported in The Scottish Sun:
"RANGERS are closing in on £20million worth of investment through a share issue which could bring about significant boardroom change.SunSport understands a mystery Asian investor and a Hong Kong-based backer are poised to plough millions into the Ibrox club.Douglas Park, tipped to become chairman when Dave King officially stands down later this month, will also provide further additional funding. An announcement confirming the Ibrox windfall is expected to be made before the end of month."
There are currently legal claims against Rangers from the likes of Sports Direct, Hummel and Memorial Gardens, and at this point of time any investment in the club would be an extremely risky proposition. So feel free to gulp down these recent rumours with a pinch off salt.
After all, we are not new to incredible claims from Ibrox at this point. Were not they about to sell Morelos for £50-million a few months back?
