Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton absolutely destroyed the myth that Rangers fans have created about Steven Gerrard and his abilities as a manager.

It is very possible that Rangers would have already sacked Steven Gerrard if not for the fact that he signed a lucrative new deal recently that they will have to pay a fortune to get out of – something that they cannot afford to do at this point of time considering their financial situation, having lost £25 million over the past two seasons.

After it had appeared that the Rangers were making progress in the first half of the season, they have completely fallen off the rails since returning from the winter break. Over the past 11 domestic games, they have won five, lost four four and drawn twice. As a result they find themselves 13 points behind Celtic in the Premiership and out of the Scottish Cup already.

The only saving grace of their season has been their qualification for the last 16 of the Europa League where they will take on Bayer Leverkusen, who boast the likes of Kai Havertz, Leon Bailey and Jonathan Tah. And while nothing is set in stone in football, it would not be too much of a stretch to say that the Germans will be overwhelming favourites when the two sides meet.

Chris Sutton recently went on a rant and destroyed the myth that the Rangers fans have created about Gerrard’s managerial abilities. The former Celtic man wrote in his Daily Record column:

"“Steven Gerrard had been given way too easy a ride as Rangers manager.“This week it has finally come to a stop and he’s getting thrown around the bus.“Supporters who were lobbing themselves on to the ground at his feet are now howling their disapproval and asking serious questions. You have to say it’s not before time.“For me it’s gone. It was gone the moment he got off the chair of the press room at Tynecastle a week ago after admitting to needing thinking time and being unsure about where he was taking the team. That’s the end.”"

All in all, it has not been a successful season at all for the Rangers, especially considering the money that they have spent since Gerrard’s takeover. And if Celtic beat them at Ibrox next Sunday, the Hoops will go 16 points clear at the top of the Premiership and the former Liverpool captain will just sink further deeper in the managerial quicksand.
