Paul Robinson claims Celtic do not need Jeremie Frimpong
Former England international Paul Robinson has made a huge statement about Jeremie Frimpong, claiming Celtic do not need the youngster.
It is safe to say that Jeremie Frimpong has been an absolute revelation this season. His rise since arriving at Celtic from Manchester City in the summer has been meteoric.
When the Hoops signed him as a 18-year-old, he was not expected to come anywhere near the first-team. After all, the club had just signed Hatem Abd Elhamed and brought in Moritz Bauer on loan in order to fill the right-back spot. A young boy with 0 senior appearances was not expected to dislodge them. But he did.
In a matter of months, he was challenging for a spot in the first-team and making a strong case for being the regular starter. And when Elhamed went out with a long-term injury, he took the opportunity with both hands, nailing down his spot in the team. In 19 appearances for the Hoops, he score 2 goals and set up 4 more.
But his great run came to an end after he was injured against Kilmarnock, when Alan Power clattered into the 19-year-old let into the game. The Dutch youngster returned to the bench against Aberdeen.
Celtic have done pretty well in his absence though, winning all their games. And Paul Robinson has questioned the importance of Jeremie Frimpong to the team.
As reported by Football Insider, the former England international said:
"“They do not need him the way they are playing!“They have stretched the lead and it looks like the league is now sewn up.“Frimpong coming back in is a big boost because he has been playing well this year. It is not a timely return though because their form and the results they are getting they are not in need of changing much around.”"
Frimpong is quite clearly a huge part of this Celtic team. While the team has scored freely in his absence, it is not hard to see how a player like him could have affected a tight affair like the Aberdeen contest.
There is an adventure about the right-back that not too many players possess. He is special, no doubt about it. You do not nail down a first-team spot in the Celtic as a teenager mere months after coming from a different country, if you are not. Robinson’s comments seem to be coming from a place of ignorance, nothing else.
