Celtic legend believes club should have signed former star
Celtic legend, Davie Provan, believes that the club have made a mistake by not resigning one of their former players in this transfer window.
Celtic have been busy in the last few days of the transfer window. After a bland first few days of the January transfer window that saw no new arrivals, The Hoops ave managed to get two deals over the line in quick succession. The club have filled their need for a new striker by signing Patryk Klimala from Polish side, Jagiellonia Bialystok, for a fee of around €4-million. And Ivorian midfielder, Ismaila Soro, is also on his way to Parkhead.
But one position that they have not strengthened in yet is winger. And club legend, Davie Provan, believes that Celtic have missed a trick by not resigning Patrick Roberts from Manchester City.
Roberts spent two-and-a-half very successful seasons at Parkhead on loan from the Premier League giants, although one of them was cut short due to a hamstring injury. Joining the club as a 17-year-old, the teenager was a huge hit with the Celtic fans.
In 79 appearances for the Hoops, the English winger scored 18 times. He has not managed to find that level of success anywhere since then though. Unable to break into the Manchester City, he has bounced around from one loan club to another, struggling to rediscover his form.
Davie Provan wrote in The Scottish Sun:
"“While we’re at it, why didn’t Celts take another loan punt on Patrick Roberts?“The Manchester City winger has now been leased to Middlesbrough after flopping at Girona and Norwich.“But with James Forrest struggling, Hoops fans would take Roberts back in a minute.”"
Now 22 years old, Roberts spent the first half of the season at Norwich City but failed to make any impact there and managed only 24 minutes of action. As a result, he was sent back to his parent club and the opportunity was very much there for Celtic to resign him. They were not too keen on bringing back their former star to Parkhead though and he has ended up at Middlesbrough.
