Alan Hutton believes that one Tottenham Hotspur player would have been “a great signing” for Celtic and it is not Victor Wanyama.

Every time the name Tottenham Hotspur crops up in Celtic transfer news, the fans automatically think of Victor Wanyama. The Kenyan spent a brilliant a couple of seasons at Parkhead and it was there that he made a name for himself on the European stage. And now after failing to break into the Premier League side’s first-team for quite some now, he has been continually linked with a return to the Hoops.

The fans quite clearly still fondly remember Wanyama. It was the Kenyan who scored the opening goal in that famous 2-1 win over FC Barcelona in the Champions League at Parkhead and as a result, he will live in Celtic folklore forever.

Unfortunately, he has not been able to fulfill the promise that he had shown in those Celtic days. Right now, he struggles to make the bench on a consistent basis. As a result, a move away from the club would be best for him to bring his career back on track. But his considerable wages will surely prove to be a stumbling block in any transfer.

Alan Hutton believes that there is a different player at Jose Mourinho’s side that Hoops should have signed. Speaking with Football Insider, the former Scottish international said:

"“I think he’d be a great signing. When he was at Leeds I was really impressed, for one so young to put in performances like that was brilliant, and then to get the move.“After that it didn’t quite work out for whatever reason, he didn’t get a lot of game time. He’s so young, still to find his feet, he’s got time and I think a move like that, playing in front of a big crowd, European nights – it would be brilliant for him. It would be great moving forward – I know there’s a lot of people interested, especially in the Championship. It just depends on where his head’s at and does he want to move up to Scotland.”"

The 19-year-old was a revelation last season, making 24 appearances for Leeds United in the Championship, scoring twice and providing two assists as well. This convinced Tottenham to make a big money move for him in the summer but it has not turned as expected for the winger since then.

He was immediately loaned back to Leeds United to continue his development but managed only 134 minutes of football this season before being sent back to his parent club. And Celtic were said to be interested in taking him on loan. But now, the 19-year-old has joined QPR and the Hoops have missed out on a brilliant youngster who could have proved to be a solid option off the bench.
