Worrying claim about Celtic's January transfer plans

A worrying claim has been made about Celtic's January transfer plans, despite the poor summer window and fan pressure.

It would be an understatement to say that Celtic had a bad summer transfer window. The club failed to meet minimum expectations. On top of that, they allowed Adam Idah to leave on deadline day without bringing in a replacement first and then failed in their pursuit of Kasper Dolberg, leaving the Hoops empty-handed. They would eventually sign Kelechi Iheanacho as a free agent.

In the aftermath of the summer transfer window and as a result of the club's failure to qualify for the Champions League, fans have not been happy. They want change and one would imagine that the board are under pressure to make things happen.

So, many fans had been hoping that the club would be keen to prove a point in the upcoming January transfer window. But a counterargument has been made already.

Brendan Rodgers' current contract runs out next summer. And with an extension nowhere in sight, would the Hoops back the Northern Irish manager in the transfer market in January? As reported by Glasgow World, Clyde SSB pundit Gordon Dalziel said:

"The other big question marks you've got to look at, is the manager going to be there next year? What happens when Celtic get to January, when that transfer window opens again, is he going to be backed? Because if he's not going to be there in the summer, why they going to throw money at him? Look, I think the anger from the Celtic supporters, and rightly so, was it was the way they went about their business."

Worrying claim about Celtic's January transfer plans with Rodgers' future in doubt

That is certainly a point worth considering and one that many fans might be overlooking. There is no guarantee that Rodgers will be here next season. In fact, it is very likely that he won't be.

So, will the club go out months before his departure and spend significant money to bring in players that he wants? That could certainly be counterproductive in the long run.

It all depends on how much say Rodgers has when it comes to transfers in the first place. There are a lot of players who do not seem to fit his system but have been brought in over the last few years. If he does not have much of an input, then it would not hurt to go out and sign some fresh faces in the winter.
