Wilfried Nancy already had to overcome a storm at Celtic. The Glaswegian club have some of the highest standards in the world given their rich history of winning, but they are in the worst place they've been in for quite some time.
Martin O'Neill did a great job of coming in and steadying the ship. Nobody had any doubts about the club legend, but he went above expectations during his interim period. So much so, some Celtic fans were calling for him to be given the job permanently.
So, Wilfried Nancy had some big boots to fill. The former Columbus Crew head coach, who was known for being an astute tactician and ripper of the rulebook, lost his first game in charge.
Celtic lose 2-1 away from home against league leaders Hearts. The result can be forgiven, it's not the worst result the Hoops have had this season. However, the comments made by Nancy afterwards do not make for good viewing.
Wilfried Nancy's Celtic take is a hard one to agree with
Speaking after the Hearts loss, Wilfried Nancy insinuated that he doesn't care too much about results. Instead, he would prefer to see improvements in the team's performances.
In his own words, Nancy said: "I'm not about losing or winning, I'm about having a good performance. We all want to win, but for me, we will look at what we can do better. The most important thing for me is what we can do better when we attack or when we defend, and in terms of mindset."
Yeah... That goes without saying. Celtic needed better performances, but not nearly as much as they needed better results.
It's understandable, Wilfried Nancy is still learning how to approach things at Celtic. In MLS, a bad result might be excused as there is plenty of room to make up for it. In Scotland, though, a bad result against the league leaders means far more.
Look, the performance was good. Celtic did most things right, except bury their chances in the final third. However, in truth, Celtic fans would have taken a scrappy one-goal win over losing despite a good performance.
Performances mean something, sure, but they mean nothing when the result is against you. In half a year, when the Scottish champions are decided, nobody will remember which team had the best performances.
Frankly, this sounds like something Celtic fans would mock a Rangers manager for saying. Let's hope that Nancy has more positives to take next game, rather than clutching at straws.
