Celtic left themselves short of options in a number of positions across the pitch after the recent summer transfer window. For months, it was believed that the club wanted to sign a traditional defensive midfielder. At least that is what the reports in the media suggested. But ultimately, they did not make any addition in that area of the pitch.
While Celtic have a lot of midfielders, that is a profile that they are still missing and could be useful, especially in big games. Interestingly, they might have the chance to sign one as a free agent.
As reported by Mark Hendry on his Substack last month, Celtic and Rangers were alerted to the availability of Pierre Ekwah. The midfielder had had his Saint-Etienne contract terminated by mutual consent back on September 1.
Interestingly, there is a lack of clarity around Ekwah's situation, as Transfermarkt continues to show him as a Saint-Etienne player. On the other hand, another report has raised questions about Celtic's stance on a move for him at this point.
Update on Celtic move for former Chelsea midfielder for free
As reported by Football Insider, Pete O'Rourke said regarding the situation involving Ekwah:
"The player has not taken part in much of Saint Etienne’s pre-season or played any games as well. He’d be lacking fitness. He’d probably be waiting for a while before he could be match ready for either Celtic or Rangers as well.
“So that’s why I think it’d be a deal that maybe both clubs will be wary of stepping in for Ekwah. I don’t think Celtic or Rangers will be pushing to do that.
“I do think both clubs are probably well stocked in midfield as well. They don’t need to bring in a midfielder as a free agent in the current circumstances. I think both clubs have got enough cover."
Well, that is somewhat speculative. That being said, it is based on logic as well. If Ekwah has indeed been available since early September and the club have not made a move for him yet, there is very little chance that they will do in the near future. And even if they bring him in, how long would it take the Frenchman to find his fitness?
Let's see what the future holds. Ekwah certainly finds himself in a tough spot. Will the former Chelsea and West Ham United youth standout end up at Celtic Park at some point? We will find out pretty soon.
