The winds of change are blowing in Scottish football once again. Celtic need to make sure that they bring their season back on track despite everything else going on around the club with regard to the fans and the board. On the other hand, it looks like the Rangers are closing in on the appointment of their next manager after sacking Russell Martin merely 123 days into his run in charge at Ibrox.

It was a run to forget for sure, but one nobody will be able to. Under the management of Martin, the Rangers won one out of their first seven league games. In the Champions League qualifiers, they lost 9-1 on aggregate against Club Brugge. And they also lost both their Europa League games.

So, who will the Rangers bring in to replace Martin? Is it going to be one of the best rising managers? Or someone with a proven record of winning?

Well, it looks like it won't be either of those. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Steven Gerrard’s return to Rangers is now closer than ever, with talks advancing and set to continue this week. Positive initial discussions have been held in the last 24 hours and the Ibrox club's hierarchy is set to meet with him to discuss further details.

That is news that a lot of Celtic fans will be happy with as well. Gerrard does not have a great record in management and the only reason the Rangers might want him is because he won the league title the first time around at Ibrox, and would be a popular appointment.

Let's not forget though that it was the only trophy he won in three-plus years in charge at Ibrox. It was not a great run by any means.

Also, since leaving Ibrox, he has struggled. His runs at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq were nothing to write home about.
