Who will be the next Rangers manager after Russell Martin was shown the exit door following 123 days in the Ibrox hot seat? That is a question that will intrigue pretty much everybody, including Celtic fans. It has already emerged that Sean Dyche is not interested in the job, and to be honest, it cannot be an attractive one after the club have sacked managers in four consecutive seasons. There is some movement regarding their next boss though.
It looks like the Rangers will go back to the tried-and-tested after failing by making the adventurous appointment in the summer. Yes, we are talking about none other than Steven Gerrard.
As reported by Sky Sports, Rangers are set to hold talks with Gerrard this week about a potential return to the club. He is the one that the ownership is particularly keen on.
Gerrard would be a popular appointment for their supporters, that is for sure. Of course, they seem to have forgotten, or are overlooking, the fact that he won just one trophy in three-plus years at Ibrox the last time around. Will the club of the fans show the same amount of patience again? Considering how things have turned out for their previous four managers, it is hard to think so.
Sky Sports drop next Rangers manager news Celtic fans will love
Gerrard did win the league title as Rangers manager, and stopped 10IAR in the process. But other than that, he has enjoyed no other success in his managerial career.
He flopped at Aston Villa, after leaving the Rangers in the middle of the season to join them. And he could not get it done at Al-Ettifaq either.
So, the Rangers might be looking to bring in a proven league winner in Gerrard. But at the same time, there is zero guarantee he will even be good, forget being a success. In fact, there is more reason to believe that it won't work out. Is that the type of risk the Ibrox club can afford to take at this point in time?
