The start of Celtic's pre-season is looming and fans still haven't been given a new signing to look forward to, although the World Cup and Scotland's hopes in North America will be occupying the minds of many at this stage.

Martin O'Neill may have a very different view after taking on the job full-time and demanding a sizable budget for this summer. The slow start to business certainly won't make him feel any more comfortable having been disturbed by the poor start to last season that he will have seen from afar.

As the Hoops search for their first signing of the summer and others battle it out for targets, we have rounded up all the latest from across the Scottish top flight.

Maeda stay on the cards

Celtic forward Daizen Maeda appears to have opened the door to a Parkhead despite being rumoured to want to leave this summer. Maeda is firmly on the list of players who could be lured away by clubs in bigger leagues this summer, but a stay may not be out of the question.

The Japan World Cup star told BBC: “That, if you do your best, the supporters will feel it, and they’ll want to root for you. So I want to continue doing my best in Scotland.” Those comments will be seen as rather interesting to Celtic fans, many of whom have been resigned to Maeda's exit this summer.

Rangers miss out

Rangers are now set to miss out on Westerlo right-back Bryan Reynolds after they were outbid by another club. The Gers were said to have initially had a ÂŁ2.5million bid accepted by the Belgian club, but another top-tier club have agreed to spend more.

According to the Daily Record, Ligue 1 club Rennes have now offered ÂŁ3.3million for the American full-back, and are expected to complete a deal despite Reynolds having been keen on the move to Ibrox. A tough break for Rangers.

Falkirk keep Neilson

Premiership newcomers Falkirk have tied up a tidy bit of business by ensuring Lewis Neilson stays put after a solid loan spell from Hearts last season. Neilson has agreed a two-year deal to make the move permanent.

ManagerJohn McGlynn said: “Everyone knows Lewis, with him spending last season here on loan. At 23, he’s the perfect age, and we know he has a little bit of improving to do, but the raw material is there."
