Most people believe that Celtic need a third striker despite having two very good options already in the form of Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah. Johnny Kenny is the one with that role right now but it is safe to say that he has not contributed much since returning from his loan spell with Shamrock Rovers. So, will the Hoops make an addition in the summer transfer window to fill that need up top?
Celtic did say goodbye to Kyogo in the winter without bringing in a replacement. Lately, there has been speculation about players like Mathias Kvistgaarden, David Strelec and others. But what about someone who is already proven in Scottish football?
The player we are talking about is Lawrence Shankland. The Hearts captain had been linked with a move to Celtic not too long ago and this summer, he is set to be available as a free agent.
Shankland's form has dropped drastically this season and he has scored just four league goals. But then, one cannot overlook the 48 combined goals he scored over the previous two campaigns. There is no doubt that the Scottish international knows his way to the back of the net.
Scottish international backed to join Celtic for free
As reported by 67 Hail Hail, while speaking on Open Goal about Shankland, Si Ferry said:
"What about this, if you are Celtic and you are always talking about needing that third striker? He is somebody you would take?"
It looks like Tony Watt is pretty open to the idea as he replied:
"Somebody who has scored 25 goals. I don’t think it would be the worst."
It remains to be seen if Celtic do end up making a move for a third striker this summer. It is possible that they do not consider that idea and instead go for a winger instead.
But if they do want a striker, someone like Shankland would certainly be an option worth keeping an eye on. He is proven in Scottish football and if provided with the right chances, which he should be at Celtic, could score for fun.
