Scott Brown's defence of the Celtic board's poor recruitment simply doesn't add up. Brown has obvious reasons to have some loyalty towards the current Bhoys chiefs, given he was well paid and well looked after during his long and impressive run with the club.
But that loyalty may have led him to some misguided comments on how the club has handled recruitment.
He said on The Warm-Up: "Look, they’re making the stadium better, they’ve put money into the team. They’ve signed three midfielders in Sorensen, Baur and Van den Berg.
“I agree they needed to replace Engels with a box-to-box midfielder. And I still think they need another left-back, because if Kieran gets injured, Scales isn’t the answer.”
The midfield argument just doesn't add up. Celtic fans are not denying that enough bodies were brought in. There were 10 signings, but just filling seats, so to speak, is not good enough for a club of this size.
There has to be a thorough and efficient recruitment process that moves the team forward, and even if there are missteps, which there always will be, the intention has to be there.
It wasn't this summer. Celtic were all over the place with their recruitment, and excuses were made throughout. We heard about agent fees and all of that nonsense, but where were the plan Bs, where were the plan Cs?
Van den Berg might end up being a good signing, but he is 19 years of age, while Sorensen is only on loan. Mika Baur looks to be a good value for money signing, but he didn't address what Celtic needed most, which was a replacement for Arne Engels.
The midfield recruitment, or lack thereof, has completely hamstrung this Celtic team, and it's not good enough for the club to say 'we signed three midfielders, what more do you want?' There has to be a level of quality that improves what was already at the club, and that wasn't the case.
That is abundantly clear after the start to the season.
