Two games are far too early to make a judgment on Wilfried Nancy as a manager. That being said, some of the mistakes that he has made so far cannot be ignored either. The Frenchman will need to learn quickly that this is not the MLS. He is not going to get a significant amount of time at Celtic to get things right. If he does not start delivering results quickly, he will be gone sooner than he anticipates.
The AS Roma game was always going to be tough. That being said, it should never have been this one-sided. We have seen this Celtic team get positive results against the likes of RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and Atalanta over the course of the last year. They are well capable of putting up a challenge, which they did not this week.
A lot of that has to be down to the changes that Nancy seems to be intent on making immediately upon his arrival. He played three at the back against AS Roma and paid the price for it.
In the long term, that might be his vision. But right now, Nancy simply does not have the personnel to pull it off. Good managers show pragmatism and find a way in these situations. The Frenchman is not doing that.
'Ridiculous' - Celtic fans slam Wilfried Nancy for decision vs AS Roma
It would be safe to say that a lot of Celtic fans were not impressed with Nancy's decision to play three at the back against AS Roma. One wrote: "Tounekti and Yang fullbacks in a back 5? You know that’s ridiculous."
Another added: "I don't think in Celtic's history there's ever been a more obvious mistaken appointment."
A third said: "Don't change to a set up which the players are alien to and not had time to implement. And the players are quite frankly not good enough or comfortable with the ball at there feet in this set up."
To be honest, we could not agree more. Changing systems take time. You simply cannot come in and make such significant decisions in the middle of the season, especially when the team had picked up decent momentum, winning seven of their eight games under the interim management of Martin O'Neill.
A lot of fans are already worried about the Scottish League Cup final against St Mirren. One wrote: "Any one of us could have taken the team for the Hearts game and nobody would have decided to go a back 3, absolutely nobody. My fear is for Sunday now."
If Nancy ends up losing that final, it might already be the beginning of the end for him at Celtic. Now, that may sound like exaggeration after just three games but once you lose the fanbase, it is almost impossible to win them back.
Let's just hope that he is starting to learn the importance of winning at a club like Celtic. He might not be all about losing or winning, but this institution most certainly is.
