For the past few months, Kyogo has been constantly linked with a return to Celtic. It is very clear that the decision to leave the club in the winter, passing on the chance to play Champions League knockout football to join Rennes, was a major mistake. The Japanese forward is struggling to make the matchday squad months into his £10 million move.
As a result, it looks like very likely that both Rennes and Kyogo will consider a parting in the summer. In fact, the French club's latest decision has made a Celtic return a lot more likely.
Celtic already needed to strengthen their forward options this summer after Jota suffered a long-term injury, while Nicolas Kuhn continues to be linked with a move away. And following Rennes' decision, they might be tempted to try and bring Kyogo back.
As reported by Ouest-France (via Daily Record), Rennes will accept a "fraction" of the £10 million fee they paid Celtic to sign Kyogo. He has failed to impress Habib Beye.
Rennes make Kyogo's blockbuster Celtic return possible
So, it looks like Kyogo is going to be available for a fraction of the transfer fee that Celtic received for his exit just a few months back. As a result, a reunion might very well be worth considering.
Celtic need to strengthen in that area of the pitch. And Kyogo is someone who is proven in Scottish football, having scored 85 times for the Hoops before leaving to join Rennes.
That being said, just because Kyogo is going to be available for a bargain fee does not mean that Celtic will make a move. The club might very well be looking towards the future and have other transfer targets picked out. Mathias Kvistgaarden and David Strelec appear to be two of them and are both available.
