Greg Taylor's future at Celtic Park is up in the air. The Scottish international's current contract runs out at the end of the campaign. On the other hand, the club have already agreed a pre-contract with Kieran Tierney who will leave Arsenal in the summer to make an emotional return to Parkhead as a free agent.
Of course, when Tierney returns, one would expect him to be the starting left-back for Celtic. That raises question marks over Taylor's place in the team, after he has been the starter there for several years now.
Taylor was left out of the starting XI against Dundee United for Jeffrey Schlupp. But it had nothing to do with his current situation.
As reported by 67 Hail Hail, Brendan Rodgers said to Celtic TV about the decision to start Schlupp ahead of Taylor in the game against Dundee United:
"Yeah, just coming in and training with the guys and understanding how we play and how we work, he’s picking it up all the time.
“He started last week, he’s come into some games and it’s just about building Jeffrey’s fitness as well.
“He’s very athletic, he’s got a great left foot and he’s been given a chance. We have changed both fullbacks because they are very important in how we play so it’s good to get him another start."
Real reason Greg Taylor was dropped in Celtic vs Dundee United
Taylor has done a solid job for Celtic since arriving in the summer of 2019, when Tierney left for Arsenal. But he has never broken out and established himself as one of the club's most important players. There has always been the feeling that the Hoops can improve there, which they might be about to do.
Tierney has a shaky injury record though. So, Celtic must have a solid backup option, who can be brought in whenever needed and deliver consistent performances.
So, Taylor staying at Celtic would have been ideal for the club. But, it looks like that might not be the case, as he has been heavily linked with a move to Dinamo Zagreb in the summer.
Let's see how things play out over the coming weeks and months. For now, the focus has to be on the upcoming Champions League second leg against Bayern Munich.
