Celtic had a rollercoaster of a game against Bayern Munich. It looked like they had taken the lead in the first minute through Nicolas Kuhn only for the goal to be ruled out as Adam Idah was in an offside position while he obstructed the view of the goalkeeper. Of course, there is controversy around that decision and many believe that it should have stood.

It was not the only controversial decision on the night though. Another was when Celtic were not awarded a penalty.

There was a lengthy check in the VAR room for Dayot Upamecano's challenge on Arne Engels. It appeared that the French international had stepped on the Belgian midfielder's foot inside the penalty area.

Referee Jesus Gil Manzano was sent to have a look at the incident on the monitor. After several looks, he decided to stick with his original decision of no penalty.

As reported by The Scottish Sun, TNT Sports' Rory Hamilton read out the official ruling from UEFA as to why no penalty kick was awarded to Celtic for the incident. The commentator said

"The Bayern Munich player [Upamecano] played the ball in a fair manner before the contact between the players."

Not everybody agreed with that line of thinking though. Pat Nevin said about the decision on BBC Radio Scotland:

"That huge amount of time, considering Dayot Upamecano stood on Arne Engels' foot in the box, I'm surprised by that.

"It doesn't matter if you kick the ball away, you're not allowed to kick people in the box - them's the rules."

Of course, if Celtic had been awarded that penalty, who knows how this game would have turned out. It is safe to say that the Hoops were not helped by the refereeing on the night.

They do have hope of getting something out of this tie heading into the away leg at the Allianz Arena next week. Celtic might not have been able to make the most of the Parkhead atmosphere to win, or at least get a draw.

Daizen Maeda's late goal has kept them in the tie though and now, it remains to be seen if they can go to Germany and pull off an upset. They certainly had their moments in the first leg and should be confident in their abilities going into the second. Let's hope for the best ahead of next week.
