Celtic always needed to sign a striker this winter, even when Kyogo Furuhashi was at the club. Instead, they green-lit the Japanese forward's exit in the middle of the season and then ended up not even signing a replacement for their first-choice up top. To most fans, that does not make any sense at all.

It is not like Adam Idah has been in stellar form. Yes, he has scored three goals in his past two appearances but before that, he was on a 14-game goalless run.

There is the theory that Daizen Maeda could be used as a striker while Jota takes his place on the left flank once he is up to speed. That works on paper. But how will that play out in reality?

Finishing has never been considered Maeda's strength while at Celtic. He has been in good goalscoring touch this season but that is as a winger. Why change something that is already working?

Real reason Celtic did not sign Mathias Kvistgaarden

That makes the decision not to sign a striker this winter even more confusing. Mathias Kvistgaarden was believed to be their top transfer target to replace Kyogo for a long time.

As reported by the Daily Record, Celtic had been tracking long-term target Kvistgaarden. But their interest cooled when Brondby bumped up their transfer valuation to around £14 million.

Admittedly, that is a steep figure for Celtic and would their transfer record. But when it became clear that they were not going to be signing Kvistgaarden, they should have shifted their focus elsewhere.

Kelechi Iheanacho joined Middlesbrough on loan from Sevilla. There is no way that Celtic could not have made a proper run at signing the former Manchester City striker if they had really set their minds to it. Another confusing move.
