It is safe to say that the Rangers are in a tough spot right now. They had to show Russell Martin the exit door after merely 123 days in charge, with Celtic sitting nine points ahead of them in the title race. That has been followed up by Steven Gerrard unexpectedly turning the job down, when it had looked like his appointment was only a matter of time. Now, there is a new favourite. And his name is Danny Rohl.
It would not be wrong to assume that most Scottish football fans would not have even heard of Rohl before this week. But he does have a decent resume.
He has been a number 2 at Bayern Munich and for the Germany national team. He also exceeded expectations at Sheffield Wednesday. He does look like a good coach, there is no doubt about that.
It was always curious that his name had started to crop up in the media even while Gerrard was the firm favourite to get it and an agreement was believed to be close. Now, it has become clear why that was the case. And in the aftermath, he is the frontrunner for the job. How do the two Glasgow fanbases feel about it though?
Rangers and Celtic fans react as Danny Rohl named favourite for Ibrox job
The majority of Rangers fans clearly wanted Gerrard back. The cardboard cutouts had been taken out. And now, it has become clear that he won't be returning. As one of them wrote: "Can’t help but feel that Danny Rohl is just RM all over again. He’s hardly had the experience you’d expect to rely on to show that you’re capable of managing a club the size of Rangers."
Some Celtic fans are not making the mistake of writing him off though. One wrote: "Danny Rohl is a decent manager. In my opinion he’s a better option than Gerrard …. Don’t think we should be too happy …"
Of course, succeeding at a club like Sheffield Wednesday is very different to getting the job done at Ibrox. The difference in expectation is night and day, that is what most struggle with.
