Celtic now know their Europa League opponents after the draw was made on Thursday, and there are some tough fixtures on the docket.

The Bhoys showed in their Champions League qualifier that they are going to have to improve significantly to put a run together in Europe this season, but how can they expect to do in the league phase based on their fixtures?

Here we take a very early look - and guess.

Ferencvaros - Home - Win

The Hungarian side reached the Round of 16 in this competition last season under Robbie Keane. They finished second in their league and won the cup.

But Celtic have to win games like this if they want to have a run in the competition, especially at home.

Union Saint-Gilloise - Away - Lose

Union Saint-Gilloise also finished second in their league and won the cup last season, with the Belgian side actually reaching the Champions League last season, where they exited in the league phase.

This is a team usually between the Europa League and Champions League in terms of standard, as LASK were, and Celtic didn't do well away to the Austrian side. Until we see improvement from this Bhoys side, this one is likely a defeat.

Celta Vigo - Home - Draw

Celtic could well get a point here, being at home, but it will be a huge challenge. Celta finished sixth in LaLiga last season and are, on paper, a class above the Bhoys.

Omonia - Away - Win

Omonia won the Cyprus top flight last season and reached the playoff phase of the Conference League. Celtic should be a level above them and pick up three points, even away from home.

Besiktas - Home - Lose

Besiktas finished fourth in the SuperLig last season, which they will be disappointed with, but they did have to swap managers. The Turkish side have a strong squad, and this is likely to be Celtic's most difficult home game.

Torreense - Away - Win

Celtic have to be winning this one. Torreense are a second division Portuguese side, and they qualified by stunning everyone to win the Portuguese cup.

Marseille - Home - Draw

Marseille have a strong squad, but they have financial problems and there is a not so positive vibe around the club. Celtic fans will be up for this one, with the French side having a superb support of their own, and the Hoops should be able to grab a home point.

Benfica - Away - Lose

Benfica scored six against Hearts in the first leg of their qualifier, and they are clearly a class above the Scottish Premiership, with no disrespect to Celtic or anyone else. The Portuguese giants have a classy squad and could likely compete well in the Champions League. Lisbon is a tough place to go, even with the wonderful memories.

Total points - 11

What would that mean for Celtic?

Celtic actually picked up 11 points last season and progressed, with nine points and a minus two goal difference enough to progress to the playoff round last season. 16 points was the threshold to reach the Round of 16 without the need for a playoff, which does not look likely based on Celtic's fixtures and current squad.

A return of 11 points is likely to get them an unseeded playoff spot, with 13 points the threshold for a seeded spot last season.
