It has been almost a decade since Virgil van Dijk left Celtic. He arrived at the club in 2013 as a little-known Dutch centre-back from FC Groningen. By the time he left a couple of years later for Southampton, it was clear that he was destined for big things. But not even his most optimistic fans could have predicted the heights that he would go on to reach.

Van Dijk spent two-and-a-half seasons at Southampton before joining Liverpool in a £75 million move, a then world record fee for a defender. He has proven to be worth every penny, many times over.

Today, Van Dijk is considered one of the best centre-backs in the history of football and has won every trophy possible at Liverpool. Yet, it is very clear that he still has fond memories of his time at Celtic.

Van Dijk recently shared a throwback picture on his Instagram story of himself playing for Celtic against Andrew Robertson, who was then at Dundee United. It was accompanied by the caption: 'We've come a long way brother'. The two Liverpool teammates recently captained their respective national teams in a game between the Netherlands and Scotland.

Van Dijk is currently the captain of Liverpool. On the other hand, Robertson has been a key part of their team for many years as well.

It will be interesting to see if that remains the case. Jurgen Klopp will be calling time on his Liverpool career at the end of this season. Will their next manager stick with the old guard or try to implement new ideas?

Another thing that needs to be pointed out is that Robertson came through the Celtic youth ranks himself. And he has never ruled out the possibility of joining the Hoops someday.
