Celtic have struggled defensively this season. A lot of that is down to the fact that Cameron Carter-Vickers has had to spend several spells out on the sidelines with injuries. The American centre-back is the club's best defender and is considered their leader at the back. But he is not the only one whose absence the Hoops have felt in this campaign.

Carl Starfelt clearly did not get enough credit during his two seasons as a Celtic player. He left the club last summer in order to join Celta Vigo.

Liam Scales has taken his place in the team and all things considered, he has done a relatively good job. But it feels like Celtic looked much more secure at the back when Carter-Vickers and Starfelt were the duo in the heart of defence.

Many thought that Starfelt left Celtic because of his partner leaving for Portugal. But it looks like that might not have been exactly the case. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, Michael Gannon said on the Record Celtic podcast:

"He got a better offer, an offer he fancied in Spain and went for it.

“I think the girlfriend thing was a bit of a red herring.”"

It would be safe to say that Starfelt is not having the greatest of time in Spain right now. He was starting games regularly earlier in the campaign but has found himself on the bench on several occasions lately.

Also, Celta Vigo are relegation contenders. They are currently sitting at 17th position in the La Liga table, just three points above the drop zone. Thus, it is possible that Starfelt could find himself playing in the second division of Spanish football soon.

As for Celtic, they will need to find a reliable centre-back in the summer, who can challenge Scales for a spot in the starting XI. On the other hand, they can only hope that Carter-Vickers is able to put his injury problems behind him for good.
