Hint about Kasper Schmeichel's retirement plans after joining Celtic
Having seen Joe Hart win seven trophies over his three seasons at Parkhead, Celtic fans were a lot more open to the idea of the club signing a 37-year-old Kasper Schmeichel than they would have even a few years back. Brendan Rodgers knew exactly what to expect from the Danish goalkeeper, thanks to their time together at Leicester City. And the move is starting to feel like a transfer masterstroke already.
Four league games in, Schmeichel is yet to concede a goal. That includes games against the Rangers and Hibernian.
Of course, it is way too early in the season to come to any conclusions. But if Schmeichel can continue performing like this then Celtic fans would want to see him remain at the club for years to come.
Schmeichel is clearly in the twilight of his career though and one has to wonder how much longer he will continue playing. Judging from his legendary father's comments, it does not feel like retirement is on his mind though.
Hint about Kasper Schmeichel's retirement plans after joining Celtic
As reported by Ekstra Bladet, Peter Schmeichel said when asked whether his son's career is quietly drawing to a close:
"For me, it doesn't feel like it's towards the end. It doesn't, so there's nothing sad about it. I think the focus must lie somewhere else entirely.
"I see many, many, many good years ahead of him. "
Age should not matter if someone can still deliver on the pitch. And at the moment, Schmeichel is still capable of doing that, from what we have seen in a Celtic jersey. Of course, he is still the Denmark number one as well.
If Schmeichel can continue keeping clean sheets every weekend, he should feel free to play ten more years if he wants to. At the end of the day, careers are getting longer in modern football, thanks to the advancement of science and technology. Also, it has always been a bit easier for goalkeepers to continue playing for a few extra years anyway.
