Celtic are already closing in on one midfield signing, as Paulo Bernardo looks set to join the club on a permanent basis from Benfica after a successful loan stint last season. And it looks like there are more midfielders on the club's radar this summer, as they look to improve Brendan Rodgers' squad and show progress in the Champions League.

Defensive midfield has been a problem position for Celtic for several years now. Many players have been signed but nobody has really managed to establish themselves in that role.

As a result, Callum McGregor has featured as the deepest midfielder for some years now. But most believe that the captain is at his best in a more forward role.

Amidst all this, Celtic are being linked with a highly-rated defensive midfielder, currently playing in Italy. The player is Tanner Tessmann of Venezia. In fact, Inter Milan were believed to be close to signing him but now, that move appears to be off, opening up opportunities for other clubs to try and sign the American international.

As reported by GianlucaDiMarzio.com, Tessmann will not be a new Inter Milan player. Negotiations between the two sides have in fact come to a halt as the club have not been able to reach an agreement with the player's agents. Several teams are now back in the race for the American midfielder. In Italy, there are Torino, Parma and Como, while abroad there are Celtic and Brentford.

Thus, it will not be easy to sign Tessmann for Celtic. A number of clubs around Europe are seemingly lookng to sign him.

That does go on to show the level of player that Celtic have their eyes on and that has to be viewed as a positive. These are the type of players that the club need to sign him if they want to show genuine progress at the European level.
