Celtic will need to bring in some reinforcements in the summer. That has become pretty clear over the course of this campaign. The Hoops have struggled all season and look like a shadow of their former selves. One could argue that Brendan Rodgers has not gotten the best out of a squad that won a treble under the management of Ange Postecoglou but then, the club were always going to have a tough time replacing the Australian.

Left-back is one area where Celtic are lacking quality options at the moment. An addition was expected to be made in the winter but that did not happen.

On top of that, Alexandro Bernabei has left on loan as well, leaving Greg Taylor as the only genuine option there. The entire situation around the left-back position is confusing, to be honest.

Fortunately, it looks like a highly-rated Dutch left-back is in Celtic's sights. They are not the only club hoping to win the race for his signature though.

As reported by 1908.nl, Celtic and Rangers have shown interest in Gijs Smal. In addition to Feyenoord, KAA Gent has also reached out to the player. He also has options at FC Copenhagen and RC Lens.

Smal is 26 years of age and a regular starter for Twente FC at left-back. His current deal with the Eredivisie club runs out in the summer though and it looks like he will head out for a new challenge after that.

Smal could look to stay closer to home with Feyenoord or move abroad. It remains to be seen what he chooses to do but it is quite clear that he will have no lack of options to choose from. The Dutchman could be a solid addition for Celtic, who could do with a player like him, who is entering his prime.
