Celtic are in contention for two trophies, the Premiership and the Scottish Cup, despite having an inconsistent and rather underwhelming season so far. To be honest, winning silverware domestically has not been rare for the Glasgow giants in recent years. But there are other areas where they have struggled to meet expectations.

One area where fans would like to see Celtic improve is promoting their academy standouts into the senior team. The last one to make that jump and become a first-team regular was Kieran Tierney and it has been almost half-a-decade since he left for Arsenal in a Scottish record move.

One youngster who has gotten a few chances this season is Daniel Kelly. He actually got a decent run of games earlier in the year.

But with Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate returning to the first-team fold recently, minutes have once again proven harder to come by for Kelly lately and understandably so. There seems to be an eagerness to hand a contract extension as soon as possible though.

As tweeted by Anthony Joseph, Kelly has knocked back an initial contract offer from Celtic, but remains in talks over a new deal. Both parties are still keen to agree terms.

Kelly's current deal with Celtic runs out at the end of this year. That means that he would be free to enter pre-contract talks with other clubs over the summer.

One of the key reasons Celtic have struggled to promote their academy standouts in recent years is because many of them have chosen to leave before ever making that step up. So, it is imporant that players like Kelly, who have a chance of making it in the senior team in the future, end up remaining at Parkhead. Let's see what the future holds.
