Coming into the January transfer window, many Celtic fans took it for granted that the club would sign a left-back. It was viewed as an area of need. Since then, Greg Taylor has picked up an injury as well. And it would be safe to say that Alexandro Bernabei has never convinced since his arrival from Lanus in the summer of 2022.

Yet, Celtic have not signed another left-back so far. And as we enter the final hours of the transfer window, it is likely to remain that way, unless they come up with a late surprise.

Celtic have been linked with plenty of left-backs in recent times though. And it looks like they were even interested in a Manchester City player.

As reported by Football Scotland, Sergio Gomez was asked on tentatively. But Manchester City did not want the player to leave in this window on loan.

Gomez is not a key part of Pep Guardiola's plans. But he has gotten playing time here and there. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has made 10 appearances and played 358 minutes of football this season so far.

Someone like Gomez had the potential to be an excellent signing for Celtic, even if on straight loan until the end of the season. But it was not to be.

Even on Deadline Day, the speculation has been that Celtic wanted to bring in a left-back before the window closed. With every passing minute, that is starting to seem more unlikely though.

Of course, it is possible that Celtic have managed to get a deal done already and the media has not gotten wind of it yet. It is hard to imagine that that would the case though, especially with the supporters not happy with the situation.
