Celtic hero against Barcelona announces retirement
Celtic and Barcelona have taken part in some memorable contests in Europe over the years. Of course, when that topic is brought up, most fans think of the club's 2-1 win over Lionel Messi and company at Parkhead back in 2012. There have been other occasions as well though, when the Hoops have gotten the better of the Catalan giants.
Almost a decade before that, they managed to defeat Barcelona over two legs in the UEFA Cup. The match away at Camp Nou ended in a goalless draw.
That was also the full European debut of David Marshall. The goalkeeper helped Celtic on that night by keeping a clean sheet.
Celtic and Marshall came up against Barcelona the very next season, that time in the Champions League. The Hoops lost but the goalkeeper did manage to get a personal highlight for himself, saving a penalty kick from Ronaldinho.

Marshall's career at Celtic was not a long one. He made about 50 appearances for the club before leaving to join Norwich City.
Marshall spent the next decade-and-a-half playing across the English Championship and Premier League. He was linked with a return to Celtic at one point. While that did not happen, he did end up coming back to Scotland. spending the last couple of seasons at Hibernian.
Now, as reported by Hibernian's official website, Marshall has announced his retirement from professional football. He has agreed to join the club’s football department and will become their Technical Performance Manager.
At the international level, Marshall appeared almost 50 times for Scotland. Now 39 years of age, it is easy to see why he has decided to call it a day. We can only wish him the best of luck moving forward and hope that he finds success off the pitch as well.
