When rumours broke out earlier linking Celtic with a move for Jordan Henderson, they seemed pretty improbable. The Liverpool legend had joined Al-Ettifaq in the summer and while it looked like he was on his way out of the club, it would be very difficult for the Hoops to get a deal done for the Englishman.

That might have become a lot easier now. It looks like Henderson is set to be available as a free agent, meaning Celtic will not need to reach any agreement with Al-Ettifaq.

As reported by The Athletic, Henderson has reached an agreement with Al Ettifaq to leave the club. They are in the process of finalising the termination of the contract. He is close to joining Ajax on a permanent basis.

Of course, this means that no transfer fee will be involved in Henderson's next move. But it looks like Ajax are closing in on a deal and if Celtic want to get anything done, they will need to be quick.

Someone like Henderson will bring a lot of quality and experience to Celtic's midfield. But one has to wonder whether signing him at this stage of his career would be the right move for the club.

If the club indeed want to sign him, they will never have a better chance to do so. The queston is, do they even need him?

There are certainly other positions on the pitch where they need more immediate reinforcements. Striker, left-back and goalkeeper are quite certainly three of them.

It remains to be seen how things play out. Henderson might be available as a free agent but even then, a move to Parkhead seems unlikely. It is more than likely that he will be donning the Ajax jersey instead.
