Liverpool have one Dutch centre-back with whom Celtic fans are very familiar. Of course, we are talking about Virgil van Dijk, who first made a name for himself at the European level while at Parkhead before moving down to England. He has enjoyed quite the career since then and is considered amongst the all-time greats today.
Liverpool have another Dutch centre-back in their ranks though. Someone who has had nowhere near the success of Van Dijk. And it looks like he could be eyeing the exit door.
As reported by Kicker, Sepp van den Berg is reluctant to spend a season as a backup option at Anfield. He is said to want to stay in the Bundesliga and he can leave the club.
Van den Berg joined Liverpool in 2019 and has not managed to become a regular feature for the club since then. Instead, the Dutch centre-back has spent most of his time out on loan. The last spell came at Bundesliga club, Mainz 05.
Celtic have chance to sign Liverpool's Dutch centre-back
If rumours are accurate then at least a couple of Bundesliga clubs are interested in signing Van den Berg. There might be an window of opportunity for Celtic to make something happen as well.
Celtic are believed to be looking for another centre-back this summer in order to provide some competition for the starting spots in the heart of defence. Liam Scales and Cameron Carter-Vickers look like automatic starters at the moment, when fit and available.
On the other hand, there are a few Celtic centre-backs who could be on their way out of the club this summer. There has been speculation around the future of Stephen Welsh while Gustaf Lagerbielke and Yuki Kobayashi appear to be completely out of first-team plans at this point in time and an exit would not be a bad idea.
