Celtic are quickly running out of excuses as they continue to stumble in the Premiership title race, one which they had been in complete control of not too long ago. Brendan Rodgers' side have seemed completely uninspired in recent months though, putting in one disappointing display after another. Their latest blow was a 1-1 draw at home against Kilmarnock.
It had looked like Celtic were going to get a win on the day, thanks to a first-half goal from Kyogo Furuhashi, a lead they were not able to build on. That proved vital, as Kilmarnock found an equaliser in the 92nd minute to take a point from Parkhead.
The result means that the Rangers will get the chance to go two points clear when they take on St Johnstone. And looking at the difference in momentum between the two Glasgow sides, they now have to be considered heavy favourites to win the league from here.
Celtic have looked lifeless in recent times and the fans clearly have not been happy. There were boos at full-time after the game against Kilmarnock, as patience seems to be running out quickly.
Rodgers sends message about Celtic fans' boos
Rodgers had a message for the supporters after the game against Kilmarnock. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, the manager told BBC Radio Scotland:
"There’s still a long way to go.
“And I’m sure it will to and fro between now and the very last game. I’ve said before it was never going to be a procession.
“Every title is there to fight for and we’re there to do that. I can totally get the reaction of the supporters because even at 1-0 today they wouldn’t have be happy with that performance.
“And so for us then to draw the game I can, I can totally get it. All I can say is that we’ll be doing everything we possibly can to get the team in a better place after a disappointing result to go again next week.
“And we just got to stay with the team and give us that great support that they always will do."
Unfortunately, it is hard to put much trust in the team right now. They have not done enough to earn that through the course of the season.
This looks like a shadow of the side that won the treble just last season. Rodgers has not been able to get the best out of the players that he has, although even bigger questions need to be asked about the recruitment and the lack of ambition showed by the club in recent times.
