Celtic broke their transfer record this summer to sign Arne Engels from FC Augsburg for a fee believed to be in the region of £11 million. That was a significant figure to pay for the Hoops, especially for someone who is not proven at the top level. The Scottish champions must really be convinced about the Belgian midfielder's talent and potential to make that sort of investment. He will be tasked with replacing Matt O'Riley, who left for Brighton & Hove Albion.

The last two weeks have certainly been memorable for Engels. He made his first appearance for Celtic, coming off the bench against the Rangers. Then, he made his full international debut for the Belgian national team and impressed with his cameo on the day.

Engels has a long way to go but he certainly seems to be on the right path. Let's hope he fits into Brendan Rodgers' system and turns out to be one of the best midfielders in the Premiership.

One manager Engels will know well already is Rangers boss, Philippe Clement. They were at Club Brugge at the same time.

They were seen catching up before the recent Glasgow Derby. As reported by Football Scotland, when asked if Clement had wished him well at his new club, Engels said:

"Yeah, he said it was a good step for me. We spoke a bit of course from the last years we were together in Brugge. So yeah, nothing special actually. He wished me good luck and that's it."

Of course, Engels is expected to take some time to adjust to the Scottish game. And even when he does, do not expect him to walk straight into the Celtic starting XI.

Celtic have plenty of options in midfield. Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate are pretty much nailed-on starters at this point. Paulo Bernardo put in a fantastic performance as well in the recent Glasgow Derby and looks ready to compete for his place in the starting XI.
