A player who failed to cut it at Celtic is now in line for a Bundesliga move. Freiburg striker Junior Adamu was brought in for the second half of last season in a bid to fix the Bhoys' scoring woes, but he did not help.
The 25-year-old, who arrived on loan from Freiburg, made just four league appearances and failed to register a single goal, although he did net once in the cup.
Adamu now set for a move
Having struggled at Celtic and with no chance of featuring regularly for a very good Freiburg side going forward, Adamu is now set to move on, but in what will be a surprise to Hoops fans, he is set to bag another Bundesliga move, remaining in the top flight of European football.
According to Kicker, Schalke, who just won 2.Bundesliga to win promotion back to the top flight, have agreed a deal wortth 1 million euros to snap up the striker. The deal is said to include another 500,000 euros in add-ons.
Adamu had featured regilarly for Freiburg in the past, registering more than 60 outings, but the German side have stepped up their quality in the last couple of years, competing in Europe.
Adamu has been a victim of that, but he will now join up with a Schalke side that will be hoping to remain in the top flight next season.
What we do know is that Celtic were not interested in a deal given his struggles at the club. Although, it may not be a total reflection on his ability, given plenty of good strikers have had difficult loan spells and gone on to do well elsewhere.
When Adamu signed, Martin O'Neill said:" I think Adamu can do that (play a part). I think there's a little bit of pace with the young lad from Lorient (Mvuka). And I think that, yeah, so it'll just give us a couple of options as much as anything else."
Adamu went on to struggle for games, with fellow winter signing Kelechi Iheanacho enjoying much more game time during what turned out to be a double-winning campaign. But the Austrian striker took a league-title and Scottish Cup medal with him back to Germany, and he can now get back to operating in a league where he seems to feel more comfortable.
Although, his best scoring season came in the Austrian Bundesliga while at Red Bull Salzburg, where he scored 10 times in the 2022/23 campaign. He will be looking to discover that form in Germany, with more regular football expected with Schalke.
